Basics of Science Communication
Researchers play a central role in public communication about science, alongside professional communicators and journalists. They write articles and commentaries for newspapers and magazines, give interviews, appear at public events, are present on social media and more. If you want to reach the general public, you have to get to the heart of the issues in a targeted and generally understandable way.
This introductory seminar is designed to raise awareness in science communication. The participants
learn about the interplay between research and the media. Using basic concepts, they learn about the the essential aspects of good communication and identify reasons why science communication is important.

Communicating professionally – basics of science communication
Communication change – from message to dialogue
From target groups and media – striking the right tone
The core message – talking and being understood
Trust in science – important factors for more trustworthiness
The course will take place on-site at IMK-IFU. It will be held in English language.
Target group
12 doctoral students and postdocs can participate.
Registration
Please register by submitting a short motivation email to Elija Bleher by 30 September 2023 at the latest. We allocate the 12 places following a first come, first served approach. Registration is binding. The course fees will be covered by the IFU Graduate Program. In case of no-shows the course fees will be charged to the research group.
Course schedule
The seminar takes place from 9:00 to 17:00. There will be a 1-hour lunch break during which catering will be provided.
